This aircraft was the 20th design that came from Al Mooney, and its longevity of production ensures it's a flagship part of the Al Mooney legacy.
Over 11,000 of these aircraft were produced, with production only halting from 2008-2014 before it was continued. The M20R itself came to be in 1995, and since then it was one of the most popular aircraft in the family.
It was designed to help deliver a happy medium between the MSE and the TLS, offering an impressive 280HP Continental IO-550 engine to get it up in the sky.
While only 54 Ovation came to be in total, it was immensely popular at the time. Indeed, it won the Flying 1994 award for Single Engine Plane of the Year.

I own and fly a 1999 Mooney Ovation. Bought this to improve my instrument scan for IFR training. Despite an insulting description ("relic from another era" - my plane is 21 years old, young compared to an average 50 years for the GA fleet!!) and an inaccuracy ("only 54 Ovations (were made)" - mine is s/n 177), this is a surprisingly good model. My only issue is this: when flaps are lowered from 10 to 33 deg, or vice versa, significant elevator trim is needed immediately. In the model, not so much. Still, all-in-all, this model made me feel right at home.
