During the Second World War, we witnessed many new aircraft enter the history books – some were resounding successes, other were absolute disasters. In the case of the Heinkel He 219, however, it’s safe to say that it comes out of the war with a stunning report card. Even today the Heinkel could still do a more than serviceable job, and served as a solid night fighter – working as a stationary fire platform to keep outposts well-guarded from air strikes. One of the big pluses about the Heinkel besides its power was the immense visibility that the pilot was afforded. Because of the high glass cockpit that was like a bubble, the pilot could see every direction with absolute clarity, allowing for accurate fire and defensive stability.

Additionally, the cockpit also had ejection seats for quick getaways should the aircraft become too damaged, and the layout of the cockpit made defending with the Heinkel extremely easy. Controls were easy to tell apart, which made the power of the Heinkel even more impressive – it could be operated by just about anybody! Its easy flight instructions made it a powerful mobile firing base, and provided a stability that even modern planes would purr over. It was at first a slight adaption of the Daimler-Benz DB 603A, but it provided a more stable platform in the sky and could climb to higher heights at a quicker speed. Additionally, its engines gave a far greater thrust, allowing it to cover larger spaces of ground than the 603A.

The Heinkel brought a huge amount of firepower to the skies, providing a massive gun platform that could hold as much as eight cannons, as well as a gun that was created specifically for wiping out enemy bombers. It could also have as many as six cannons at the front, providing a truly powerful fire base for any position that needed aerial support. Within range, few aircraft would be able to withstand the sheer firepower provided by the Heinkel. As one of the first war aircraft to utilize radar as well, this was a truly special aircraft for the time and at one point appeared to have shifted the tide of the war entirely on its own!

It was faster than a traditional Allied bomber despite its immense size and power, and acted as the vanguard of many defensive positions with its incredible array of firepower marking it as one of the most devastating of the Second World War era. However, although its own legacy was ruined by poor decision making by its designers it left an incredible legacy for the potential firepower and balance of speed & strength that many aircraft bring to the table today.
