Indeed, the well-loved and much revered Boeing Vertol CH-46 Sea Knight aircraft is one of the finest additions to the world of medium-lift helicopters ever came up with.
Standing as some form of inspiration for helicopters for generations to come, this was still being used by the US Navy as of 2004 and the USMC in 2015. Whilst it might be out of commission in 2016, it stands the test of time when using FSX!
With the help of this brilliant mod by Virtavia, you can finally get to fly this legendary piece of hardware in all of the ways that it was supposed to be in the first place. Revered as a troop transport of genuine power and class, this was regularly used to provide all-weather transport for large groups of troops as well as making sure that equipment and supplies can be moved quickly and easily without issue.
It was eventually replaced by the MV-22 Osprey but until then it was seen as a hugely welcome addition to the world of aviation. If you have always wondered how they fly and how they control themselves, this mod will let you see just what has to change and what needs to improve to make sure they can fly to their highest possible level of potential.
At one stage, this helicopter was viewed as the go-to option until the MH60S Knighthawk came on the scene which made it redundant to the Navy. That being said, even today you can still feel the excellent level of power and control that these brought to the table and you can use this to your advantage starting with this mod!
What's Included?
Three wonderful variants of this model have been included in here, making sure that you have access to a design that looks fresh and interesting. The whole package does a great job of helping you understand and truly love the style and format of the real thing, giving you fresh models such as;
- CH-46D, HC-11 "Gunbearers", NAS North Island
- HH-46D, NAS Pt. Mugu, SAR "Pedro"
- UH-46D, HC-3 "Merlins", NAS North Island
New Features
One of the main benefits of this mod, though, is the wealth of new features that this introduces to your simulator, including changes like;
-
A highly detailed flight model which is complemented and improved with the addition of some new HH-46D reflective textures. These textures do a wonderful job of helping the whole thing come together and ensuring you can have an easy and effective layer of realism to a model with every detail included.
-
A fully native FSX model is being used which comes with all of the elite features that you would now expect of a proper FSX model - this has full bump mapping, self-shadowing and much more which helps the whole thing come together and look as spectacular as it can.
-
Another huge benefit of using this mod, though, comes from the fact that it has the sounds to match the design. With the help of this CH-46 soundset you'll get access to features which really will improve your overall position and make it easier than ever to hear what's occurring.
-
New animated exit ramps are included as your primary exit, much the same as the real thing, as well as side doors and steps. It's these little touches of realism that help the whole project feel authentic and make it easier than ever to manage, control and optimize your enjoyment.
-
An authentic virtual cockpit design has been included which looks wonderful and comes with unique animations, mousable switches and so much more. Together, all of this makes it easier than ever to enjoy yourself and have some fun whilst also giving you a much better level of functionality when flying.
-
Improve your overall flight enjoyment and realism by using a simple and effect process thanks to the new 2D panels - these even provide you with a viewpoint from the rear cabin which looks excellent. All of these features make it easier than ever to manage your flights and have fun!
-
A full checklist is included which comes with reference files and planning to help you not only fly truthfully but to fly properly. Use the checklist to make sure you follow the specific requirements of this aircraft so that you can get used to its little unique quirks and factors!
-
If you wish you can use both the winch and cable feature by using the animated tail hook function. This is a great future - for FS9 users only - which makes the aircraft as useful as it is attractive to look at and simple to fly. It's these changes that really bring home how close this is to the real thing.
-
Highly realistic crew figures are included who look excellent and make it much easier to buy into the real thing and help you understand, enjoy and get used to the style and format that this aircraft would expect, with every needed crew member included.
-
Crew figures can be toggled on the water ruder command - to use this, simply hit SHIFT+W to make the command come into place. Also, you can command the rotor blades to show fore/aft and left/right tilting by simply using the functions provided. Both features are FS9 specific.
-
A new range of virtual cockpit rain effects which do a wonderful job of helping you understand and appreciate the view that you get from the cockpit as well as the actions that weather can force you to make, given a lack of visibility or control when flying through storms!

Never really been a fan of helicopters - they just seem really weird to me - but I decided to finally let go of my bias and try it out here. The whole idea of this project is that it will let you get all the assistance that you need to see just how much fun a Sea Knight could be and I'll admit that I'm converted now. It looks great and spends a lot of time giving you the help that you need to get to grips with its rather challenging nature whilst still having so much more to learn as I got used to it.
In total, I must have put about 20 hours into flying around with this so far and I am LOVING it. The addition of the crew figures is a nice little extra for me as I imagine it wasn't necessary; it just makes it feel that little bit more realistic, though.
The whole idea of flying an aircraft I always find is to see other parts of the world that I won't be visiting anytime soon and this chopper let me just fly around and enjoy the view of the parts of the planet I decided to go and visit when flying around.
It's great fun and makes it nice and simple for me to just enjoy how much things can be change by mod groups. From the panel and the model to the actual performance of the aircraft everything here is so incredible impressive.
